Who doesn’t want bacon for Valentine’s, right? I know I do! Hopefully my Prince Charming gets the hint. Prince William, are you reading this?!
I dropped by Save on Meats this morning to try a few slices of this famed To Die For banana bread and decided to order a few other items I haven’t tried. I knew it would be hard to beat the $6 burger but I thought I would give it a shot.
First up though, was the bacon banana bread. You should probably know that I love banana bread to begin with. I love that the fruit adds moisture and sweetness to the bread. Erin Ireland’s bacon banana bread is no exception, it was everything I had hoped it would be, moist and fluffy on the inside and sweet from the bananas as well as chocolate chips with crunch from the nuts. And the bacon just adds that extra kick of saltiness that brings all the flavours together, enhancing the sweetness and adding dimension. It’s a quirky spin on a traditional quick bread. Imagine my glee when I found a big piece of bacon between my two slices of banana bread. I will fall in love with the first guy who sends me one of these loaves for Valentine’s. I can’t think of anything more romantic than bacon. I think Homer Simpson would agree.
We ordered The Clubhouse sandwich as well, which was roast chicken on white toast with bacon, tomato, lettuce and mayo. I just couldn’t get enough of bacon today!
The chicken was very moist and flavourful. It tasted fresh, after all, it was from the butcher shop right next door. Again, the salty, crispy bacon really tied the sandwich together, enhancing the natural sweetness of the tomatoes and also adding a crispy, crunchy texture to the sandwich.
I am always amazed at the fries at Save on Meats. They are always just the right texture, crispy on the outside, soft and crumbly in the middle with just the right sprinkling of salt.
I also had a craving for pancakes this morning so we ordered a stack of three. I was disappointed to find out that Save on Meats’ pancakes are thin, floppy flapjacks as opposed to thick and fluffy pancakes. I obviously prefer the latter, they soak up more syrup that way. But to satisfy my craving, I ate these anyway. The second disappointing thing about these pancakes was that they tasted like burger buns. I’m pretty sure this was because they were cooked on a grill that was previously toasting buns. Anyhow, other than that, the pancakes were pretty fluffy when I stacked them up and they were great syrup soakers.
Don’t forget to place your Bacon Banana Bread order before Valentine’s Day! Prince Charming, I’m talking to you! More info on Erin Ireland’s blog, It’s To Die For.
