The best thing on the menu at The Crepe Kitchen is not the crepes, it’s the cheesy, creamy and rich Croque Madame sandwich. Tucked away on a side street of quaint downtown Oakville, The Crepe Kitchen is something you see on the set of Gilmore Girls. Inside, the display counter is piled high with baskets of breakfast pastries, muffins and cookies. Doilies line the few small and charming tables inside, homey rugs cover the floor and the little bakery smells of brewing coffee and sizzling bacon. We were there so early that they didn’t have bread ready for the sandwiches. I’m unclear on whether or not the bread was still baking or if they ran out of bread from their supplier. In any case, a staff member quickly ran out to get some bread for us and our sandwich was served up in less than 10 minutes.

Spilling full of thick and rich mornay sauce, the Croque Madame sandwich could barely close. Thankfully all that melted emmenthal cheese was gluing the sandwich shut. They also add just the right amount of butter to keep the grilled bread moist but also crispy on the outside.

It’s a good thing we shared this sandwich because that scrumptious fried egg in addition to loads of gooey, stretchy cheese plus mornay sauce is what food comas are made of.

Needless to say, I didn’t even touch the salad on the plate. But I can’t wait to go back and order another sandwich. One of these days, I’m going to try their crepes.
