I love candy apples. They’re a combo of my two favourite things: candy and apples. Candy apples always make me think of autumn: Halloween, carnivals and Thanksgiving. However, I haven’t actually eaten a candy apple since I was a kid: 1st grade, when we made them in class. Each kid brought an apple from home and our teacher helped us jam a Popsicle stick into the core of each apple and we dipped the fruit into melted pots of caramel.

Mid-way through our shopping trip at Seattle Premium Outlets, we passed by a Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and my boyfriend asked me if I wanted a candy apple. Obviously! But on second thought, I kept picturing myself clumsily clutching my multiple shopping bags in one hand and awkwardly and greedily chomping on a candy apple held in my other hand. So I said no, weakly explaining that I hate messily biting into hard fruits. “They cut it up for you, you know,” he answered matter-of-factly. “Oh, I didn’t know that!” I answered stupidly. So obviously, doing the Asian thing to get the most bang for my buck, I picked the candy apple with the most stuff on it: the Avalanche Apple smothered in chocolate and marshmallow with rice krispies, tiger butter and chocolate chips.

The candy apple was sliced into wedges for us revealing a juicy granny smith green apple inside. I don’t know why I ever thought a civilized person would be biting into this giant monster of an apple covered with sugar and chocolate.

I’ve now decided that candy apples make the best snacks. The juicy apple inside totally quenched my thirst and the sweet and sticky marshmallow and chocolate coating on the outside satisfied my sweet tooth. The semi-sweet chocolate chips and rice krispies added the perfect texture too.
